In the dessert near El Paso, where is a good area to go shooting ?

I'm looking for a safe place to shoot, because I'm using a muzzle loader, which is .50 Cal, and is not allowed at the Rod and Gun Club. I don't want to end up on posted property or on what looks like wilderness but is in some town or city limits. Or on Bliss. :)

Thank you,

~PB

  1. get on the border, aim for the ones running with 20 kids.

    :)

  2. I live in El Paso, and I wouldn't go out into the desert because you will possibly be captured by Mexicans and sold on the black market. Sorry I can't help, I do all my shooting more North, like in Brownwood.

  3. did you say in the desert

  4. check with your local laws or police; or just get 500 ft away from any buildings, private property, or restricted land; and shoot into a dune

  5. There is a great place on the westside near the Santa Teresa airport, but south of it a bit. Look for a couple of small hills. Also, if you are out that way, Kilburn's Hole is a popular place.

There's a spot on hwy 54 north of the city limits, west of the highway. Out east, drive on Montana until you are out of town and go on any of the roads south. You will find good sandy hills to act as backstops.

The El Paso gun Club has a range you can shoot blackpowder and everything that's forbidden at FBRGC. It's in Anthony (so you can drive over the Anthony Gap from the northeast) and membership is $36 a year, can't beat that. They have shotgun areas, a pistol pit and both rimfire and high powered rifle ranges up to 400 yards. It's unsupervised, you let yourself in the locked gate, but a whole lot safer than the desert.
