In the fighter jet/pilot game Heatseeker for PSP how do you land?

I have done everything the manual says and I still can't land. (I can't even get the landing gear down). Can you only land on certain missions? If so, please tell me which ones. Can you only land on campaign? Can you only land on missions? I'm confused...
