It would help if you listed which civilization you mean.  I am supposing something in Mesopotamia.  

They left written cuniform?? writings and my dad used to love reading about the guy that had to bring home the barley for the family.  Apparently they used it as money.  You could learn all sorts of things about how they made their living and their feelings.  You could likely see about  how warlike they were and something about their spiritual beliefs.
