In the future could this be possible?

Is it possible that sometime in the future they would have a machine that would temporarily freeze the ocean. Hurricanes can only survive over warm waters so if a hurricane formed they could shoot the ice all over the ocean and freeze the water temperature to something like -30F. Is that possible to do. I mean if the water was that cold the hurricane would die out in a matter of seconds.

  1. The hurricane would die, but so would all the marine life in that area! Not a good idea. Also, cooling the water would disrupt nature even more and cause other bad weather. We just need to accept that hurricanes (earthquakes/floods/volcanos/et cetera) are part of the planet we live on, and work to make sure they do as little damage as possible and to have well organised sensible preparations and responces in place.

  2. In theory anything is possible, although the technology to do something like that isn't likely to be developed any time soon.  However, even if we could temporarily freeze the ocean to stop hurricanes, it would probably cause more problems than it would solve.  For one thing, water expands when it is frozen, and an expanding ocean could cause earthquakes or other disasters.  It would also probably kill most of the animal and plant life in the ocean, not to mention what it would do to boats or people hanging out at the beach.

  3. It seems possible that they could just send planes out to drop dry ice pellets or something into the waters...just to cool it down, not freeze it. Just cooling down the temperatures would at least weaken the hurricanes.

  4. No, it will never be possible to freeze the ocean.
