Question:

In the game, taboo, can you use the article "the" in another context, if it is already in the clue?

So during a game of taboo, a few of my friends and I got into a heated dispute. The word was "The Brady Bunch". I proceeded to give clues to my partner by saying, "it was a famous show in the 70s". I was subsequently tabooed by the other team because i used the article "the", even though it was no where in context of the clue. How are you supossed to give a clue without using "the"? Does anyone know about any rules regarding this? Are there any arguments I can use to refute their contentions?

  1. If you're playing very, very strictly by the rules, unfortunately they are correct.  According to the rules, "No form of ANY word printed on the card may be given as a clue..." and it even has the word ANY in all caps directly in the rules.

I would have let that slide, just as I would have accepted someone saying "Brady Bunch" without saying "The" before it, but that's technically bending the rules.

If you're playing with these people again, I think you should preface the rules before the game regarding uses of the words "a, an" and "the" so you don't have to worry about this again.

  2. yeah you can use the, a, an, etc.

  3. I'm pretty sure words like "the" and "a" can be used in a different context, because its not like your team would be able to definitely know what you're talking about or something if you said "the" in a different way.
