In the game of Euchre, do you prefer to partner w/your mate or deal Jack's for partners?

My family can play Euchre into the dawn but most of the married couples prefer not to have their spouse as their partner.

Are you playing for blood (high stakes, be it money or pride) or playing for fun (social gathering, trying to play "fair")?

Euchre is the kind of game where it's easy to play perfectly if you've got the perfect partner.  I know signals aren't legal, but when you've got a perfect partner, it's easy to read each other's hand with very simple signals through bidding or subtle "tells".  I know it's not technically fair or sporting or whatever, but if you really want to win, it's easy to play perfectly with a perfect partner.  I used to have a girlfriend who could play like this with me.  Once the others realized we'd win every game, they made sure to split us up, lmao.

That's probably the case with your gathering.  It's maybe considered "unsportsmanlike" to pick a spouse for the same reason.  Maybe the spouse's aren't playing perfectly, but it's more a sign of good faith and good gamesmanship to not choose to pair up like that.  Plus, if it's a social gathering, it's more interesting to partner with a "stranger".
