  1. In the USA, Roots Web World Connect is my first choice.

You upload a GEDCOM. It is in most genealogists' bookmarks. There are half a million data bases in it, and half a billion names. There are half a dozen options to privitize, allow/disallow GEDCOM download and so on. It is free.

There is data from the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and other English-speaking places on it. The bulk of the data is from European-Americans, though. If you are Chinese or Cherokee, there are probably better places.

  2. You can try Tribalpages, which allows you to give out a password to family and friends to view your tree. But I don't think it links you up with other people with common relatives. If you want to talk to people with common relatives, you're probably better off putting the tree on genes reunited or ancestry.

  3. If you are UK based you can post a basic tree to Genes Reunited http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/help.asp?...

but it costs 9.95 GBP to upgrade to full membership

Does your ISP provide you with "free" webspace?  If so build your own website and post your tree there.

  4. It does not matter where you are based... rootsweb is among the best known sites, is free, and has nothing to restrict you as far as the geographical contents.

My strongest suggestion is that you insure that you "trim" the tree and not include living persons.  It must be a gedcom to upload.. meaning, you already have a genealogy program on your home system, and know how to make a gedcom file, which is a generic file that works with multiple programs.

I also advise that you get more exposure by using a website that is long running and stable.  I don't personally recommend sites that are trying to jump on the bandwagon, and claim they are "better" than the rest.  Rootsweb has a long running track record.
