In the kind of world we live in, why be good?

why bother with principles and morality when all that really matters

is status, wealth and power by any means necessary?

You should always do the right thing, because there is a higher power than man that everyone is going to have to answer to regardless of whether you believe in God or not. He is the final judge and he can not be fooled.

If people would learn to just "be happy", none of those catch phrases would pertain. I know plenty of good old people, Some nice guys actually do finish first, there are also some really happy poor people. It is when people spend their life trying to be impress the  people that could really care less is when the principles go out the window. Character is something that makes you who you are, not status.
