But Chatrooms don't seem to be used anymore. So my question is what method do people these days use to network. Is it mainly sites like Bebo and myspace, or is there some new form of chatroom like websites out there. This was something that crossed my mind the other day, i'm just curious.

Thanks in advance for your answers

  1. people actually MEET in pubs clubs and discos.

  2. Well the most popular web chats were MSN Chat. But that changed when MSN wanted to charge for the service. It obviosly killed it.

I think IRC is the best way to have a totally random chat with people. Hundered of thousands of chat rooms just wating to be joined.

Face and Myspace is good, but they concentrate on more message based discussions which is not what i call a chatroom.

  3. They were shut down by the ISPs and various companies [like MS] because after a few high profile paedophile rings, chat room groomers, stalkers ended up in court. As it all involved children and minors and after a great public outcry they were all shut down. I remember MS shutting theirs down.

  4. Most people i know who have internet access use networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, blogging sites, forums, message boards and instant messengers. Also a lot of people use the chat features on game sites such as yahoo games where you have to go into a game room and you are then able to chat with the whole room. I can honestly say i don't know anyone who uses the chatrooms you speak of anymore.

  5. I think chatrooms are still quite popular although they are filled with a lot of spam bots.

Get yahoo messenger and access yahoo chatrooms from there.

Alternately download a chat client that will connect you to Yahoo chatrooms (as long as you have a yahoo ID - if not, its easy to make one from Yahoo homepage)

  6. id say forums and facebook

  7. I think people have moved onto message boards, i remember back in the late 90's early 00's i talked alot on those. Though most chatting services were used by teenagers and were being used to solicit underage kids, so they had to shut them down. h**l if you go on there now it seems if only foreigners talk on em from what i heard. Its really a joke, h**l think about the things we used them for i'm not surprised really.

I think yahoo and some other sites still have them up.
