  1. It went from the 'planetary' idea of Niels Bohr, where the elctrons were in different shells, traveling in vaguely circular orbits around the nucleus, to something quite near to the present conceptualization.

    The modern conceptualization is of a cloud of probability of where the electrons might be. This cloud is generally oriented in the space near to the nucleus, but there is no longer any sense of a clearly defined orbit or even any shape to the orbit; in fact, the 'motion' of the electron is now more considered to be a matter of probabilities of it being located at any  location; that is, there is not even a sense of defined linear motion of any kind. It is closer to the idea of an electron zinging around at random. Quantum mechanics is NOT very helpful in terms of giving one a story, and explanation that fits our daily experience as humans.
