Second, do you think it is a weakness of ours and the Oil Companies (by any means) to keep finding it, extracting it, and producing it.

  1. Depends on how far in the future a long run is.

    In the long run the earth may remain long after all signs of man are gone.  So it really doesn't matter.

    If you consider a thousand years from now, fossil fuels were a stepping stone to renewable if not unlimited source of power.

    For now, any system that depends upon a limited resource, no matter how vast, is ultimately doomed to end.

    How we end or transition out of this dependence and economy of fossil fuels will determine the longevity of society as we know it.
