In the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". How did Toula's social class affect her mate selection?

  1. It wasn't her social class, as such, it was her cultural identity which caused her angst in mate selection. Marrying someone who was not Greek would have caused her family (particularly her father) distress. They had a particular view of what the role of women were in society, that is mother and wife. This would all be disrupted if Toula became educated, as she would then find a career which would inhibit these seemingly important roles; or married a non-Greek man who would dilute the importance of the functions by introducing non-Greek cultural aspects, like only having three cousins etc.  And not having the unbreakable family bonds as seen in many ethnic families.
