The preschool years are very important for children. They learn to function independently from the parents. They learn to socialize with other children. They learn fundamental academic principles. They learn to follow rules with their group. There are so many reasons. Most preschools are only a few hours a few days a week and this gives the kids a good foundation of school basics. Preschool makes the transition to kindergarden much easier for both parent and child.

One point, there are no mandatory preschools YET!  It all depends on what study you read as to who is right on the age children should start school.  The first preschools study was done for helping low income disadvantage, of low intelligent children " High Scope Perry Study" this is the one that gave us all the rage of what benefits children will have from preschool.  Unfortunately this case study is not inclusive of modern circumstances!  But yet it is being used.  Along came the government program, again for disavantage families (Not just children,but the family)  HeadStart!

Well the middle income people decided they wanted to give their children a headstart also thus Preschool was invented!  Now we want to make preschool universal.  Not all states are mandatory Kindergarten either.

The pros and cons are equal.  The Arch Bishop of Canterbury in England said "If parents would stop being infants, children could be children again!  You can do just as well as any preschool to educate your child (the internet is a wealth of education).  Socializing...libraries, bookstore reading hours, playgroups, etc.  Don't let anyone brainwash anyone into thinking the best place for a young child is in our broken No Child Left Behind...teaching to the test education!  It is and always will be the parents who will decide what is best for their child.  We need to keep the decisions where they belong Parents, caregivers.  Why must they go to school....they don't it's called homeschooling.

Every aspect of a child's development is affected... from physically too cognitively to the Behavioral sides. In the Early Childhood the brains development and retainment of information is critical. Particular areas of the brain need to be stimulated and used other wise in the clean up process the brain will delete those areas as unused. Not to say that if a child doesn't learn crucial things now they never will. It's just that it will be very difficult. Someone I can't recall said "Everything I needed to know I learned in kindergarten." These are the years kids learn the majority of what they will they will build upon for the rest of there lives. Social skills (sharing, compassion, guilt, shame). Fine tuning there "Gross and Fine" motor skills (running jumping/button clothes, holding a crayon). There thinking process because kids work in different stages (refer to Jean Pigets developmental theory). As a pre-service teacher it is important for children to get that early start and exposure to school because imagine all of the information they are expected to learn and know by the time they get to first grade and as they continue throughout there education. And let's face it a lot of parent's either don't know what or how to teach there children and others feel as though that's the teacher's job and they'll learn it when they get to school since the law says compulsory education starts at FIVE. *Remember in kindergarten we only have 9 months full of breaks and weekends to teach & expose children to only so much information & the 1st month in a half is spent letting them adjust to school, then we're digressing during breaks then schools over time for another grade....

preschool is a preparation for the real world, and school is a start for the reall world, children leanrn quicker than adults, and they are emotional and innocent, so step by step they  will gradually leanrn about life and get the important knowledge that will help them to be successfull persons in life, they are also encouraged to improve their skills and talent and pursue their favourite activities and interests. They will be more confident and more focus and realistic and smart.

Read the book BETTER LATE THAN EARLY by the Moores.  The best thing to work on until age 10 is large muscle co-ordination.  The reason the government insists on schooling has to do with indoctrination,- which is the opposite of education.

Preschool is important because it helps kids get used to being away from home, teaches them things they need to know to be ready for Kindergarten and elementary school.  It also helps them with social skills, playing with other kids and learning to listen to teachers and take direction from someone other than a parent.  Children need to go to school to learn so much more then reading writing and arithmetic.  Some places in the US have preschool as mandatory now.  Children must attend some form of preschool before moving into a Kindergarten classroom.

Kids this age need social interaction with new peers. Its great that htey get to play with their siblings at home and other familiar peers on the playground but that kind of familiar interaction doesn't encourage them to find new ways to communicate, solve problems and play. Also, preschool teachers become new authority figures for the children. THey learn to follow directions and take consequences from adults other than their parents.

So, social skills, problem solving, responsibility and basic pre-school education are all important foundations to any child's education.
