In the run-up to the Olympics people have been talking a lot about China's pollution problems,?

so why is it that the central government, who publicly encourage environmentalists like those talked about in these two reports, does not do anything to help the environmentalists when they are threatened, deprived of employment, or suddenly found to have allegedly done something illegal and thrown in jail in trials that don't fit in with even China's definition a legal trial? Take a look at these articles. Can anyone explain this to me?

I have lived in China and I know it is corrupt. I just wonder why the central government refuses to protect those who actually work for the betterment of Chinese citizens rather than those who are simply party members.
