In the state I live, we are suffering a drought. We are only allowed to hand water our flowers/shrubs/lawn ?

twice a week and before a certain time in the morning. My husband, with respect to the drought, barely waters our flower beds and bushes ~ in fact just a dusting to keep them surviving. He has not watered the lawn itself whatsoever as we've had brown lawns come back on their own. My question is: if the lawn is getting water only from occasional rainstorms, how is it that we have about a dozen huge mushrooms growing on our front lawn? How are THEY surviving?

  1. Maybe they are drought loving mushrooms?

To help water your flower beds, use biodegradable dish soap when you do the dishes, collect the grey water you use and dump that on your flowers. If you could re-route your clothes washing machine to dump outside and use biodegradable soap in there also, that would also help water your lawn/flower bed, too. Then you'll have a nice green lawn and your neighbors will be envious. :-)

  2. brown lawns will come back with return of rain.  I live in vancouver (very wet in the winter but dry in the summer) and I dont even bother watering my lawn anymore.  It goes brown every year and comes back again in the fall.

mushrooms spores can keep forever in dry ground and thus survive dry weather. When water does hit them they can sprout and grow in a single rain event. Once sprouted they can draw water directly from the air from dew etc..
