In the state of Florida can a couple become legally married after living together for seven years?

Can they be legally married, not through court though. Just by living together??

  1. It's called common law marriage, after so many years of living together, the State gives them each the rights of a married couple, it's not really like getting married, it's more of a legal way to divide property in the event of a break up, even though you're not legally married, you would have the rights of division a married couple would have.


  2. As others have said -- it's called "common law" marriage. There are certain conditions that have to be met.

    More importantly it does not make you "married" and you do not get the rights and privileges that a legal marriage entails.

    Sorry...but if you want to be married with all the rights and privileges involved - a trip to the court house will be needed.

In those states that recognize common law marriage, it is merely a property right, and not a marriage for all purpses.  No state recognizes the cl marriage just by living together.  Instead, they each require that the couple hold themselves out as being married.  So, things like using a joint checking account, using the same name, introducing themselves as Mr. and Mrs., joint ownership of property, etc.  Merely living together, without more, does not make a cl marriage.
