In the state of Virginia, if you are applying for a job, (ex. Wal-Mart, Big Lots), how far back does a background check go? I was informed that it only went back 7 years, although I do not know if that is true. If somebody committed a felony in VA 22 years ago, would it show up on a background check if I took one tomorrow? With the exception of federal jobs, ofcourse.

  1. Yes, you are right, the Fair Credit Reporting Act states that only the past 7 years may be used for hire during the employment screening process. So their 22 year old felony, might show up, but it can't legally be used against them to obtain a job.
