  1. Its a personal decision.  Space Marines are good because they are tough, won't run away (even though they WILL fall back), and there are different rules for the different chapters.  Also, you won't go broke buying the miniatures like you will with Imperial Guard or Tyranids.  Personally, I play the Word Bearers Legion of Chaos Space Marines.

Whatever decision you make, as long as you have fun collecting and playing....it's the right one!

  2. i would have to agree with bruce here warhammer.com has background info on all the races and their distinct classifications ex. space marines-dark angels ultra marines blood angels black templar ext. go check it out

  3. The creators of this game work extremely hard to get every army equal. They even update the rules constantly to make it fair. Because of this, no matter what army you pick, you can always be victorious. My suggestion would be to research all the armies and pick the one you think is the coolest. Remember for as long as you play warhammer, you will be buying, building, painting, and playing with these guys, so you need to be sure its an army you won't get bored of. I picked chaos because I loved their story and how I get space marines and daemons. Find your own reasons to pick an army, and don't limit yourself to space marines and chaos, because every army is good, so give them all a chance.

  4. That's like asking which is better Ford or Chevy, Hot dogs or Hamburgers, Jessica Alba or Jessica Biel... The answer is neither or both...You should explore which Army interests you the most. Don't choose an army based on what you have "heard" is "easier"...If you are just getting into the hobby, do some research. Go to the GW website (the UK Website has alot of background info...) and look around. Look at the background section of the NEW rulebook. There is literally an army for everyone...Go with you GUT reaction. When I got into the hobby about 18 years ago, I REALLY wanted to play Dark Angels, but I got talked into Ultramarines. Ultramarines are a great army, but I hadn't gone with my gut and I regretted it.  If you like the look of the Eldar...play ELDAR, not Space Marines just because someone told you they were easier.....

  5. neither.

both factions require you to commit to alot of purchases and you end up with a lot of models that you will not use.

furthermore, its quite often than whenever they update the codex or rulebook, spacemarine or csm armies always need an overhaul to your list.

only commit to csm/sm if you really LOVE them and willing to dish out thousands of dollars getting multiples of all units and tanks, etc.

if not, you can look at the other equally interesting factions like Tau, Tyranids and Necrons which armies are less complicated and focused army choices which doesn't require you to buy EVERYTHING.

fyi, i quit my Black Templars because even though it is a really good army, i just didn't want to commit (read spend useless $$$) to buying 2 - 3 sets of everything so they can be used effectively.

But if you got tonnes of cash and money isn't an option for you, then by all means go with Space Marines, their new codec is coming out really soon, and they should not get a revamp in 5 years or so. ;-)
