  1. I think that anything larger then the type of van you use if you have a really large family requires a special license...

*You need to post that a Lorry is a "Truck" in US English... US people might not know what a Lorry is...

It depends on what you NEED TO DO... Are you going to move a large house hold? Do you need to drive a huge group of friends? Do you need to transport a car or pallets of something?

In the US, if you drive a large number of people that are not related to you around, like more then a dozen or something like that, you need what is called a "CDL-B with a P" or Commercial Drivers License for driving something bigger then a van but smaller then a tractor-trailer With a Passenger Qualification .

If you want to drive a tractor-trailer then you need a "CDL-A" showing that you are trained to drive such HUGE equipment.

Over all... If you can buy it for personal use, you usually don't need a special license but if you are planning on driving more then 12 people, be safe and either take the test or hire someone to drive.

  2. I believe the law has recently changed that anything above 7.5 ton and you require a license as long as you have only just passed your test ....The vosa site should confirm this

  3. Anything under 7 and a half ton's

  4. check out http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dri...

If you have the same licence as me - ie you took your test AFTER Jan 1997 - then the largest size is 3,500kgs MAM - a small box van

This seems a little odd as i have taken a coach test (catergory D)  and can drive a 14 tonne double decker bus with 70+ people on board - however, i can't drive a 7.5 tonne lorry with a few parcels!!

If you do want to drive anything over 3.5 but under 7.5 then you need catergory C1 and to be 18+

Anything bigger than that you need  a C licence and to be 21+

    Hope this helps :)

  5. Your paper licence gives you all the details as to what you are allowed to drive and the weights of the vehicles.

  6. It depends when you passed your test as it changed in 1997. If you passed your test before 1997 you can drive up to 7.5 tonne. If you passed after 1997 you can only drive up to 3.5tonnes.

  7. See http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dri...

    for the full details

  8. If you passed your test before 01/01/1997 you can drive up 7500kg HGV.  After that you have to take the HGV test first.

  9. if you have just passed your test, and you are under 21 you cannot drive anything larger than a car, if you are over 21 or have held your license for more than 12mths you can drive upto a 35cwt( 3.5t ), if you held your license prior to '05, you can drive upto a 7.5t, otherwise you will need to pass a sepersate test in anything over 35cwt, with hgv & lgv tests requiring the license holder to be over 21yrs, or in the armed forces, or on a trainee driving placement with a local registered company.

  10. vans only as far as i know.
