  1. There are plenty of hurdle races confined to 4 year olds especially in the early months of the year simply because in hurdle racing a horse is not deemed to have matured until it has reached that age and many races are restricted to horses of that age.   If they do race against older horses they receive a "weight for age allowance". In steeplechasing the minimum age in UK is 5.   However bear in mind that every horse is deemed to have its birthday on 1 January so that it is in the early months of the year when these allowances are greatest.   In flat racing 3 year olds are excluded from some races like the Chester Cup because they are not considered in May mature enough to race 2m2f against their elders.

  2. the derby is for 3 year olds so i dont see why not

  3. I don't think there are any races that are restricted to 4-y-o horses only.  There are lots of races open to 3-y-o's and up, which of course includes 4-y-o's.

  4. THERE ARE MANY RACES RESTRICTED TO 3 YEAR OLD AND UP AND 4 YEAR OLD AND UP.

ONE CONFINED TO 4 YEAR OLDS ONLY THAT I CAN REMEMBER IS THE BRITISH INSURANCE NOVICE HURDLE RUN AT THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL MEETING EACH YEAR. THIS YEAR ON 16TH MARCH I HAD THE WINNER KATCHIT WHO WON AT THE GENEROUS PRICE OF 11-2

  5. Horses are raced in the UK from two-years-old, up to about 12 or 13 years old, starting off on the flat and then moving to hurdles and jumps if they can go the distance - and if they survive that long.

  6. Of course e  ...Eclipse,,King George,Coronation cup and more group races as well as countless handicaps

  7. There are plenty of races that are open to 4 year olds.  Generally speaking, flat race in GB fall into one of the three catagories: 2 year old only; 3 year old only and 3 year old and upwards.  I could not tell you how many flat races are open to 4 year olds only.

There are a lot of National Hunt races open to 4 year olds only, mainly because a 4 year old NH horse would normally be either running in "bumpers" (National Hunt Flat races) or in their Novce seaon over hurdles.  It is not very common to see a 4 year old chaser in Great Britain, as most jumping horses spend a season or two over hurdles before going chasing.  However,  I do know that there are chases open to 3 year olds run in France.
