In the years of 1989-1996 in Afghanistan, what was going on?

I know that in 1989 the Russian troops withdrew from Afghanistan, and that the Taliban took control in 1996. But what was going on between 1989-1996?

Russian lives were being lost at an alarming rate that finally made them decide to withdraw from their illegal occupation.
