  1. Well, I all ways thought it stood for 'For All Brothers'  I know I heard that some where, but I can't remember for the life of me where!  I think it's right though!  (I think it gets mentioned in one of the episodes or something!)

  2. It was a buzz word of the time - fab, fabulous etc, very Austin Powers, really.  The registration number of Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward's car was FAB 1, for example (her yacht was FAB 2). There was some speculation as to whether it meant fully acknowledged broadcast, but that seems pretty far-fetched, or far-out as they might have said. Yeah, Baby.

  3. The definitive answer came from Sylvia Anderson herself during a promotional tour of her book. It was something they made up on the spur of the moment during a writing session, Sylvia says, and it was never intended to stand for anything other than to spell out the letters of a popular British slang word--"fab"--during that era. Many people have attempted to find other meanings ("Filed, Actioned, Briefed", "Fine--Acknowledge Broadcast"), but it never meant anything other than "fabulous".

  4. That's what I would like to know, because back then in the 1960s when Thunderbirds first came on TV here in UK, we got F.A.B. at the end of a short radio transmission.  At the time out there on our streets, the word FAB had come directly from the City of Liverpool and was introduced to the world by the Beatles - it's fab, the Fab Four etc.

  5. When used as a radio acknowledgement from one craft to base then it meant  Fully Acknowledged Broadcast

Otherwise it was a shortened version of fabulous.....

Fab was a well known saying in the sixties.
