It should not be exceeded, or the transistor will probably burn-out.  That's pretty important.  But it's not just the collector current, it is the collector current * the voltage across the collector and emitter that determines the power dissipation.  THAT must not be exceeded moreso than the collector current.

    Another important thing about the collector current.  It must be set to the range in which you wish to operate the transistor (saturation, linear, cut-off).
