  2. 3 ways in my culture depending on the family and their traditions:

    1. introduced - parents introduce and the couple make the decision

    2. "dating" - where two actually are interested in each other

    3. arranged - the children have not much say (very very rare)

The wedding is very traditional and includes the nikkah, but there are some cultural aspects to it all...

  8. ermm.. here in Kuwait when a man comes forward the parents -from the both sides- ask questions about the man and bride to be .. to know whether he or she is good for the other or not !! and if they were ..then they start the preparation for marriage that's it !!   but it depends more on the family and tradition more than the culture itself !!

  9. In my culture(American) there are so many ways of performing marriages.  Some go all out and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make an elaborate affair.  Others have a simple church wedding, or outdoor wedding.  In all of these the father walks the bride down the aisle to me her groom.  They have family that will sing love songs, recite poems, they exchange vows, they have unity ceremonies and family medalion ceremonies when one or both of the couple have children from previous relationships as this is a way of including them in the ceremoney.  Some do beach weddings, some go to the extreme and have bungie jumping weddings, etc.  I was married in a small church ceremony the first time and recently i was married in morocco.  We had a waleema where I was ushered in to the guests in a beautiful green velvet caftan to have henna applied to my hands and feet, then I was dressed in two different takshitas and ushered in with my husband where we sit on a "throne" and guests came to sit by us and take pictures.  We exchanged rings, had the dates and milk, there was dancing with women performing and sometimes the couples would dance.  All the guests were family so there was no need to segregate the men from the women.  I have to say it was one of the most beautiful experiences i've ever had.  I smiled so much during those hours that my jaws hurt afterwards.  It was simply amazing to be married according to different culture and standards.

  10. In Pakistani culture, once the guy and girl say YES to marriage, they can have an engagement (totally un islamic, I wouldn't do it myself but that's what they do) and then, a few months onwards, the guy and girl have the 'nikah' in private. After that, the wedding properly beings, coz they have a marriage party. Not a party really, coz everyone dresses up (mixed men and women usually, again un Islamic) and the guy band girl sit on a stage heavily made up, with everyone staring at them for the next 4 -5 hours. Literally. And the guy and girl (even though they're married) can't talk (it's omplicated). Then, it's about midnight, the guy and girl and in laws take the bride home after 'ruksati' which means farewell. Mom and dad say goodbye basically.

The next day, we have a 'valima' feast thrown by the in laws and girl's mom and dad come home and meet the bride.

That's it. Oh yeah, I forgot the henna party before the wedding feast. Lol. Sorry, yeah, we have a henna party, where the bride has henna done to the tops of her knees and elbows. We have a 'turmeric ceremony' where people put turmeric on the bride as it's good for the skin.

To see some Pakistani bridal dresses, visit: bargello.com (it's a Pakistani website with Pakistani designers showcasing their clothes. You can buy stuff there. Go to the bridal dress bit for more)

  12. IN my "culture" we don't have arranged marriages and most get married in a church or registry office. A high percentage of men wear Kilts and the bride normally a white dress. There is usually a big "do" afterwords and it finishes way into the hours of the morning. Men and women mix and drink and dance. That is how my "culture" normally get married.

In my "religion" that is something very different. Not all Muslims come from a culture that is a Muslim majority.

I am Scottish and yes there are many Scottish Muslims but the culture and religion dont match.
