  1. In America, we only race the horses in ONE direction.  On the dirt or on the turf (green).  We have WIN (1st place winner), PLACE (2nd place winner), & SHOW (3rd place winner).  Then we have combined bets, such as trifecta, exacta, & others that I can't recall at the moment!  In these bets, you chose multiple horses in randon order & exact order of how you think they will come in at the finish line!  I hope this clears up some confusion.  I would love it if you could explain what "each way" means!  I have never heard this term.  I'm in California.  When we place a bet at the window of the track, we just say the number of the race, the number of the horse, & if it is a $2 bet for win, place & show, then we hand over $6 & just say "across the board", to the ticket agent/cashier!

  2. No. An each way bet is both on WIN and PLACE. PLACE in GB  betting means First, Second or Third (In case of 8 or more runners).

PLACE bet in US racing is for horse either winning or placing 2nd. SHOW is for Win, 2nd or 3rd position. SHOW is more or less same as a UK PLACE bet, only it is available for 5, 6 or 7 horse fields also. Payouts are generally very low for obvious reasons.

    Hope this resolves your question.
