Question:

In volleyball, what rules apply to the ball making contact with an oppenent THROUGH the net?

The question is whether the opponent commits a foul by making contact with the ball even though it is separated by the net from the opponent. Or whether the contact with the ball is ignored in such a situation. Say both opponents go up to play the ball, but the ball goes into the net and makes "contact" with opponent on the other side of the net. Are there consequences, or is it ignored?

  1. it is not legal but if the ref doesn't see it and normally they don't it is usually ignored but i wouldn' t recommend doing it in a game!!!

  2. Hi,

There are no consequences if the ball goes into the net and the net/ball hits the opponent on the other side.

You are not allowed to touch the net, but there is an exception if the ball pushes the net into you it is OK.

Also, if the ball goes into the net and and hits you, the other team can still play it off the net.  It doesn't count as a hit on your side, so the other team doesn't get another 3 attempts to get it over.

About 10 years ago, there was a trend to take advantage of this rule.  If you are blocking, keep your hands up and near the net.  If the ball goes into the net, if you are quick, you can move your hand near it and make a fist.  When the ball hits the net and then your fist, it will take a weird bounce and be harder for the other team to play it off the net.  All perfectly legal.

  3. OK IF THE BALL GOES N 2 THE NET AND YOU R ON THE OTHER SIDE AND IT CONTACTS YOU AND THE BALL HITS THE FLOOR THEN IT IS YOUR TEAMS POINT BUT IF THE BALL DOES THT BUT IS DUG OUT AND IS STILL N PLAY THN THE CONTACT IS IGNORED AND  THE PLAY CONTINUES LIKE NORMAL...IF THO YOU GO UP 2 BLOCK A BALL ABOVE LIKE THE SETTER AND YOU REACH OVER THE NET AND INTERFEAR WITH THE SET TO THE HITTER THEN IT IS CONSIDERED ILLEGAL PLAY AND THE POINT GOES TO THE OTHER TEAM

  4. In international games, whoever touched the net first lost a point... of course those games use "the perfect" net.

In the United States, some leagues (such as my company's Corp v-ball league) do not have the privilege to set up their own nets, so that they would have to rent a court or go to an open gym but the net is not so perfect... so they added a rule "if a ball hit the net and pushed the net into any part of an opponent’s body, no foul should be called".

It would still be a foul call if the opponent **initiated** the contact (such as blocking the ball while his/her fingers/arm was "swinging" into the net). Usually a ref would have a better view regarding whether it was **initiated** by the opponent player, and make the right call or no call.

  5. ok well normally it is ignored cuz u cant really help if it hits u through the net...inless u are in the net! but umm it will be ur teams pt....inless the other team digs it and saves it!

hope i was a little help!
