That different colored jersey player is called libero. And libero  can't attack (jump and hit the ball) the ball from a ten foot line which is the one near the net. That person cannot serve that ball. libero is the best passer in the team and he/she does not count and a sub during the game.

The different color Jersey is for the LIBERO they were right on that one.

A LIBERO CAN SERVE This rule went into effect at the MIAA level in 2005, and is supposed to become an international rule (meaning everyone can use the libero to serve in 2007)

A libero cannot come and go as freely as they explained it either. A libero must be replaced with the same player that he or she substituted into the game for.

Meaning if I was libero and I came in for you, the only way I have out of the game is for you to replace me.

I am then free to sub in for another player after that.

The rules about a libero setting are true they must be behind the 10' line in order to Hand Set a ball that someone attacks.

A libero cannot attack a ball ( meaning spike it from above the height of the net, or perform a block.)

A libero does not count as a substitution, and can be used unlimited # of times as long as they come in out in the correct manner.

This is probably more info than you were looking for, but that different color uniform does have a meaning.

Once a player is designated as a libero they must stay in the libero position for that entire set, unless their is an injury in which case the coach / team rep, can ask for a exceptional substituion do to injury...

Well, a girl before you already asked this so you could look there. There isn't ALWAYS someone in that different colored jersey, but it's called a libero. They wear that jersey so the ref and team know that they are the players who play only the back row and usually specialize in digging and can be substituted in and out for not-so-good backrow players without any hold up.

Its a different position called the libero.

The libero is a back row specialist who usually sub in for middle blockers (the big guys on the team) becuase they can not pass well.  It is easy to use a libero becuase they can sub in and out without notifying the ref.  

The libero can not serve or hit above the plane of the net.
