  1. The approach is VERY important.  It helps you jump higher, swing without hitting the net and swing harder.

  2. In volleyball, you have to jump off BOTH of your feet, which makes learning approach more important. You can jump higher with approach, as explained by other answers.

Only when you have a balanced high jump can you spike the ball like a pro.

  3. if you've ever done a squat jump that is what your last step is supposed to be. after you take the steps you gather all your momentum so that you "explode" upward and can get on top of the ball. the steps and approach help gather your momentum. the better your approach the better your hit will probably be. and when you hit make sure your hitting in front of you.

wait and see where the set is going and then approach.

  4. your aproach is your momentum.

if ur just runing up to the net and hitting then ur not going to get a high jump.

your approach is what makes u get up in the air.

for an approach [depending on which approach] you swhould be doing this:

types of approaches for right handed.

        2 step:

    right, left, jump.

        3 step:

    left, right, left, jump.

        4 step:

    right, left, right, left, jump.

    left handed:

is the exact opposite of right handed.

also what helps ur momentum is when you swing ur arms while doing these steps.

and you should ALWAYS, only jump off one foot.

if ur right handed, always land on ur left foot.

andi if ur left handed always land on ur right foot.

  5. you need the approach to jump higher and spike the ball harder. make sure you do it fast and have a fast arm swing. i disagree with the girl above that said that you always go off of one foot. you should always go off of two feet so you jump higher. but it also depends on what hit you are doing. remember go fast have a fast arm swing and go off two feet unless the hit says otherwise.

  6. HAVING AN APPROACH IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN HITTING. ITS GIVE YOUS SPEED AND HIGH WHEN HITTING. ITS HELPS YOU BETTER HIT YOUR SPIKE WITH STRENGH AND AGILITY.

  7. The longer the approach the better... but you have to move youre feet quicker and make sure to plant your feet so you dont go flying into the net. You need to jump higher and follow through FAST. I usually do four steps...

let your hands and arms hang relaxed and lean on your right foot if ur a righty and left if ur a lefty...

then its baby steps left, right

    longer strides LEFT RIGHT

Explode upwards and swing the h**l out of it and follow through + snapping your wrists.

  8. When I was taking the USAV CAP (Coaches Accreditation Program) class, we had to write a paper.  I was also in college and I had to design an experiment and write a paper.  I decided to study the different effects on spike velocity.  Jump vs no jump, the number of steps on the spike approach (I used 0,2,3,4, and 5 steps), the ball pressure and the type of volleyball.

The ball pressure and the different manufacturers of volleyballs had almost no effect on spiking velocity.  The jump helped spike velocity about 10% and the approach added about 20% to the velocity.  (The 2, 3, 4, and 5 step approach did not matter.  There was very little difference between the 2 and the 5 step approach.)

As said above, the approach makes you spike harder.  And you will stay out of the net.

Practice your approach without the ball at home.  Mark of a 10 foot spot and do your approach.  If you are right handed, big left, big right and little left.  The last step is close to the right foot and helps you jump up and not out.  If you take 3 big steps, you will be moving towards the net and not as high.  You should jump from both feet for most hits and land on both feet for all hits.  (The only one foot jump should be the slide, but it is a 2 foot landing.)  Do you approach, land, hustle back to your starting position, do your approach and so on.  Do 10 and take 1 minute off.  Do 10 and so on.  Do at least 100 approaches.  More if you can.  You can never think about your feet while you are thinking about the ball.

  9. When i first started i learned to go left right left with my feet. that is if you are right handed if left it is opposite. Now i don't jump i just spike it.

  10. the approach is the key to the result of ur spike if ur approach gets messed up so does everything else that follows because of the approach if u get the approach right everything else falls into place

  11. of course it does. that is the whole point of spiking. when u approach the ball,. thats all how u get all ur strenght and vertical to b able to smack the into the other opponent

  12. It really helps to learn the approach because it gives you momentum so you can jump higher and hit the ball more downwards.
