In what order do you teach the alphabet?

If you teach the alphabet in a specific order I would be interested in knowing what order and why you choose to teach it that way.

Montessori teachers... Which pairs of letters do you teach together? Why teach the sound but not the letter name? Why not teach them together? (Just showing my ignorance, I suppose, but I'm very curious about this method.)

  1. a-z  z-a after a-z    then teach them the abc song!

  2. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

or do vowels and consonants separate

    or...

    aeiou

    bdp (they look alike)

cks (c and k and c and s sometimes sound the same)

    f

    gq (look alike)

    h

    j

    l

    mnr (look alike)

    t

    vw (look alike)

    x

    y

    z

  3. You can have numbers and letters of the day...

Print out a worksheet that has a picture of the letter that they can color....

    do the same for numbers.....

we done that in preschool and kindergarten♥

  4. I taught my three year old the song.

then, when paige was about 5

i began teaching her vowels and constanants

    and, short and long

    and, on and on.

  5. I follow the SYNTHETIC PHONICS order - it just makes more sense to me as they often get b and d mixed up so I avoid teaching them too close together - then you can teach c,k & ck together.  If you want to know more google sythetic phonics. My kids are loving the sounds and actions that go with it.  The best site I have found is www.phonicsinternational.co.uk

    Good luck!

  6. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxy and z. now i know my abc's next time wont you sing with me?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Having taught in a school system (but in different schools) for special education pre-k, kindergarten and 1st grade, I've been instructed to teach them one letter per week in random order.

I choose themes and base the letter of the week off of the theme. For example, these next couple of weeks my theme is Spring.  I'm using letter C the first week focusing on caterpillars (ex. The Hungry Caterpillar book) and next week we will focus on the letter B for Butterfly. I also include other vocabulary words we can learn for that week so it's not based off of one word.  If there is a letter that doesn't necessarily fit with the theme, I try to correlate it some other way.

The regular education teachers also focus on one letter at a time in random order, but alphabet songs are taught in the typical fashion of A-Z.

    Hope this helps!

  8. I don't teach a specific set of letters together.  When a child is ready, I will introduce the letter sounds and will usually start with the first sound in the child's name so it is something familiar.  I also teach 1-2 other sounds that first time, depending on what they are ready  for.  I leave the really uncommon ones (q, x, z, etc.) for later.

Once a child learns a few of them, I begin to look for other letters that might help them to build 3 letter phonetic words with the movable alphabet.

As far as teaching the sounds to start, this is to prepare students for making words with the movable alphabet and make the transition into reading easier.  If they can make the sounds for /b/ /a/ and /t/, they can make "bat" or "tab" on the movable alphabet.  It's kind of interesting to watch a 4 year old make a long list of words and not be able to read them back to you.  (Reading comes later).

Officially, if I were to look back in my albums, I believe it says (to start) to select a small pink sandpaper letter (small consonant), a large sandpaper letter (large consonant, such as l, t, p, d, etc.) and a blue one (vowel).  I'm not sure about that, though.  And I do not know if Maria Montessori said to teach them in a specific order....I will have to double check that.

I worked with one Montessori teacher who also went through the Orton-Gillingham training.  She was big into teaching them in a specific order.  She did it 3 at a time with words that could be spelled phonetically.

I'll look tomorrow and see if there is an official way Maria Montessori did it in a certain order.  From what I have seen, most just follow their gut instinct and teach one that would naturally come easily to the child and ones that would prepare them for writing and reading more quickly.

  9. its kinda difficult since i try teaching my brother the alphabet but he never really gets it cuz he's distracted by games so...go from a-z then do numbers along with it 1 letter and number each day then after u finish the letters cont. the numbers but them tell them which letters are vowels and stuff like "oh remember a and e and i and o and u yea well they're also vowels not only regualr letters of the alphabet!" and go from there

  10. I don't like to teach the alphabet in order from A to Z because there are some pretty important letters near the end of the alphabet!  Also, if you do a letter of the week, do you realize it will take half a year to get through the whole alphabet!! I prefer to focus on a small group of letters at a time.  For example: b m s r f. They all look and sound very different. The next week you could try p w t a x. Just mix it up and do a group at a time. It's more fun that way.

  11. I teach the vowels first aeiou, then consonants in ordered by easiest to write. We practice writing at the same time. I spend one week on each vowel and then a few days on each consonant. When teaching the consonants I include the vowels to teach blends. If the consonant is b the children also learn ba, be, bi, bo, bu. Then to read they only need to add a final consonant later on.

  12. I do 1 letter per day. I do the same with numbers. To make it more clear i have #s and letters of the day!Oveously i go in order from a-z and 1-100 ♥ sam

  13. a-z

  14. a-z

and teach the th, sh, ch, ck, gh, ph sounds along the way or afterwards.

  15. Teach A-Z, teaching it in song is easier to remember. Anything with a tune will be learned quicker then without. Then you can do vowels. and CH TH SH and so on..................
