I've read on a book that you smear some oil in a jar then half fill the jar with beer. I tried that trick, using apple juice instead of beer because I'm a minor, to no avail.

  1. cockroaches love to eat every thing. there is no permanent solution to eliminate them (oldest living animal in the same form). But try boric powder + water paste. You may get relief for a few days from these insects.

  2. That all depends on several things...  What type of cockroaches do you have, what have you tried so far, how bad is the infestation, and what measures are you willing to consider?

1 - Type - Do you have the indoors type (relatively small, usually smaller than 3cm -- 1.5 inches) or do you have the outdoors type that fly (larger, can get to over 5cm -- 2 inches)?  If you have the outdoors type, capture them by hand and let them go outside.

2 - Methods - You have mentioned the jar and beer method, have you tried anything else yet?  Have you tried to make the area undesirable?  Making the place undesirable means making sure that everything is very clean (including under & behind the refrigerator & stove, in every cabinet, all walls, counters and the floor).  You can use heavy duty cleaners to do this task, but I'd also use a bleach-water solution (approximately 240ml bleach to 3800ml water -- 1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water) to finish the job.  If you live in an apartment or house attached to another (like a townhouse or row house), this will make your neighbor's place look more inviting to the bugs.  Don't forget to clean the bathrooms too, that is another place cockroaches like to visit.

3 - How bad - Are you facing an infestation?  Do you see them scatter when you turn on the lights?  Do you just see their droppings?  Do you see them during the daylight, and they show no fear of you?  If you have the outdoor type, seeing them in the light makes capture easier.  If you just see their droppings, then you have a problem that is likely to get worse.  If you see them scatter when you turn the lights on, then you have a problem that MAY require a professional exterminator.  If you turn on the lights and the cockroaches just look at you like you are invading their home, you might want to move because they are plotting your demise (just kidding about this one, but you'll need professional help to get rid of the cockroaches if they are this bold).

4 - What now - You have asked about how to do this task without pesticide...  Cockroaches love places that are not very clean.  Please do not think that I am saying that you are dirty!  You can get them from neighbors, from visitors that came from an infested place before visiting you, you may have inherited them from the previous resident.  You did not say how long you have lived there, nor did you say how long the problem has been going on.  If you are unwilling (unable) to swing a can of pesticide into action, or call in a professional exterminator, I would start with a through, deep cleaning.  If that doesn't convince the pesky bugs to leave, and you still don't want to kill them with pesticide, then you can try an electronic pest controller like the one at www.electronicpestrepeller.com . I have never used an electronic pest repeller, but they might work.  (I suspect that they work better the cleaner the environment though.)

If all this effort still fails to rid yourself of the unwanted intruders, you will be forced to call in professional help.  Cockroaches are the kind of bug that there may be 10-100 hiding for every one you actually see.  Like termites, you don't want to let the situation go too long without getting them under control.

    Good luck.

  3. The only real way to remove roaches is by having the home exterminated professionally.  The over the counter pesticides will do little.  If you have a few roaches scampering about, then you probably have thousands living about in your walls, floors and celings.

This jar method will do liittle more than trap a handful of them.

If you happen to live in an apartment then I suggest moving.
