  1. Are you asking about the CITIES of Barcelona and Valencia? We assume so. With these two cities it can be confusing because of the repeated "names".

Because as Sue says above, Barcelona city is the capital of the province of Barcelona in the Comunidad de Cataluña and Valencia city is the capital of the province of Valencia in the Comunidad de Valencia.

Barcelona City is on the Mediterranean coast. Valencia City is considered on the Mediterranean coast although it's a bit inland. The Valencia coast/beach, here they held last years America's Cup sailing event, is roughly 25 minutes away from the city center using public transportation.

UPDATE: commenting on Abuela Nany's posting, Valencia city, the downtown, is not ON the coast but it is near the coast, about 25 minutes from downtown using public transportation as I mention above. If you stay old downtown (where most people stay) and WALK to the beaches of Valencia it'll take you about 40 minutes or more. Take a look at the city of Valencia on Google Maps and you'll see what I mean. Just last year I stayed in 2 of the hostels there on the beach and it took me about 25 minutes to walk from there to the light rail (above ground, near metro stop LES ARENES) metro to just outside the old city center (metro: PONT DE FUSTA) and from there I walked inside the "casco antiguo". If I'd have stayed IN the "casco antiguo" I might never had seen the Mediterranean coast at all.

  2. Barcelona is in Cataluña... on the Costa Brava...The city is on the mediterranean coast and has its own beach area called La Barceloneta. Barcelona is one of the most beautiful and interesting cites in Europe.

Here is one of the many websites for the city...

Valencia is in la Comunidad Valenciana, it is also on the mediterranean coast (not inland as one of the other answers said). Valencia has a lovely beach area, with many restaurants and a great seaview. It  is also a large seaport, though not as important as Barcelona.

Here is a good website for info:

  3. Barcelona is in the region of Cataluña (or Catalunya, in their spelling) and Valencia is in the Comunidad Valenciana.

Each is a different autonomous region, of which there are, i think, twenty or so, and they are both on the Mediterranean.  Not "near" the coast, but ON the coast.  Both of them.  Both cities have large aquariums, the new one in Valencia is the largest in Europe.  Quite spectacular, from what I've seen.
