1. if you dont have a network you dont need it. It is network specific and is written for your network

  2. Actually, the file is only named "host". It does not have the ".txt" extension, and will not work if given that extension.

The file normally contains the following text, but may have been customized (using the instructions in the text) to contain information about other computers on your network.

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.

    #

    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

    #

    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

    # space.

    #

    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

    #

    # For example:

    #

    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server

    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

  3. dewcoons is correct. But just to expand a bit on his answer, the hosts file is just a simple text file. Just open up notepad, copy and paste the text from dewscoons answer into it, add the IP numbers you want as well, and save it as hosts. By default, notepad will probably add the .txt extension. Rename the file to remove the .txt extenstion and the copy it to your c:\windows\...... location.
