  1. g*y marriage is currently legal in Massachusetts, and will begin next week(!) in California (though there is an initiative on the November California ballot that may overturn it).

There are other states and cities with Domestic Partnership laws. Most notable is Vermont, where DP is very much like marriage, but without the name or the federal rights. Other similar laws are on the books in Connecticut and New Jersey, I think. See this link for more:

g*y and lesbians can adopt in a lot more states, though. In many it is first done as a single parent adoption (or one parent gives birth to the child) and then the other parent can do a "step-parent" adoption. In some states g*y couples can adopt a child as a couple. In a lot of states the laws are a little "fuzzy" and it can depend on an individual judge or county or social workers.

See this list of adoption laws by state:

Are Americans usually conservative in relation to homosexuals? Well, that depends on which Americans you are talking about and whom you are comparing them to. The laws in the US discriminate more against g**s and Lesbians than in some European countries -- but less than in many parts of the world. In terms of public acceptance, in a lot of places g*y couples are just accepted as people by most of their neighbors. In some cases their situation is a lot harder. g**s do face some prejudice and stereotyping almost anywhere -- but so do people of color, women, poor and working class people, adoptees.... It is unfair and wrong no matter where it happens or who it happens to.

  2. In Wisconsin you can adopt a child even if your not married.

  3. In NC g*y marriage is not allowed, nor is adopting without a man and a woman.

Most people here treat homosexuals like they are diseased. At my school my friends and I support it, and we are hated by some of the teachers. I wish we could be like the other states and just be accepting; my friends and I aren't g*y, but we don't see anything wrong with it; I believe that a person should be able to get married and adopt whether they are g*y or not.

  4. Only two states (so far) permit actual marriage between people of the same s*x - Massachussetts and California. (Though many states have what is called "Civil Unions" or legal "Domestic Partnerships".)

However, most states permit two people of the same s*x to adopt, even though they are not married. I know many same s*x couples that have adopted. I think the only state that out and out bars homosexuals from adopting is Florida.

It's certainly legal for g*y couples to adopt in New York State, that I'm sure of (I live in NY.)

  5. I've been an Adoption Social Worker in California for 10 years and in all that time, g*y adoptions (unmarried) were allowed in one form or another.  Originally is began with allowing one parent to adopt, then when that was final the other partner could adopt his/her partner's child.  These days it's much easier, both partners can adopt at the same time.  Now marriage is legal in California also, which doesn't really change the picture for adoption.

I believe CA is the most progressive on the issue of same-s*x couple adoption, though it is allowed in a few other states.

  6. My state (MA) passed g*y marriage a couple years ago , and I am pretty sure they can adopt. But yes g*y marriage is allowed in Mass.
