  1. AutoCAD alone is fundamentally a 2D technical drawing system good for layout drafting. Bolt-on limited 3D function came later. It is a popular tool for architectural and building design. But it is flexible enough to be used to some extent in any field.

    AutoCAD is fully programmable/customisable. There are a number of add-on packages for other engineering fields like:

    Mechanical & Mechanical Desktop - mechanical engineering

    Architectural desktop - specialized architectural routines


  2. All of them.  It's a basic skill all engineers should have.

  3. Almost all of them. Though Mechanical Engineers and other Design Engineers use them extensively.

  4. I use it quit a bit in work. we use Turbo cad. We are in electronics designing and engineering

  5. Any kind of Engineering where you need to draw the pictures.  Which is pretty much all Engineering.

    BTW, don't waste a lot of money on AutoCAD.  TurboCAD is every bit as good and it's a fraction of the price.
