There is many ways to differenciate them. First you look at the shape, its porosity density, its chemical composition, the hole in the bones that indicates muscle attachments (ligaments take roots in the bone close to the articulation). And then to be sure you eliminate other potential possibilities, by comparing the finding with other known sources... Normally other simians or hominids, as well as some other mammals...
