  2. Survival of the fittest. In a population if 5% can survive being eaten by other animals, that 5% will go on to create a generation of hardy animals that will survive and populate the entire region and so on......

  3. Those organisms better suited to survival in their particular population live long enough to produce offspring who are likewise better suited to survival (due to genetic inheritance).  

    Basically, healthy organisms have healthy offspring, who in turn have healthy offspring, etc.  Hence, those organisms' genes come to dominate the population's gene pool.
