In what ways can my school become greener?

Okay, my school is looking for ways besides recycling to become greener. I've thought of greener light bulbs, but they're wanting dramatic changes. Can you help me think of unique ways my school can go greener?

  1. Cover blacktop with grass.

JK!  How about textbooks & homework on CD? Might not work for someone w/o a computer tho...

My son's school just switched their buses to "green diesel" with no retrofitting any parts, they just switched without any mechanical problems or difficulties.

    Hey,

    Talk to that Ed guy.

  2. Buy earth friendly cleaners from the first company in the world to obtain Climate Neutral certification and totally offset its C02 emissions, resulting in a net zero impact on the environment. And I don't drive to the store to buy them. They are shipped to my house by UPS - who has put in processes to cut the amount of resources they use to make deliveries.

The company is environmentally friendly & the products are environmentally friendly. It's a win-win! The cleaners are also safe to be around.

  3. have of the roof of you school have a metal roof top so the sun light gets reflcted out ...and recyclig isnt bad for the envorment some people are just ignorent......or have them put up solor pannles

  4. start a recycling project in your school and if all schools would do this just think of the better off we would be

  5. Well, you can stop recycling because that's actually worse for the environment.

  6. One way to start is buying green school/office supplies.  You can save your school money as well by doing this.  Check out  the site I have listed below, these may give some insite as to making your school more green.

  7. Personally, you should propose tearing the building down entirely. Have your classes outside in nature with the sun as your primary source for light and heat. Snow for air conditioning. You should go to the nearest creek to do you toileting business, but NOT in the creek. use the water to clean yourself  but use only what you truely need. No toilet paper, no paper towels,  no sewage to speak of. . learning in nature. ah, what could be better. and your school would be totally green. Give it a try...

  8. Bring live potted plants into every classroom.

NASA completed a "Clean Air Plant Study" a few years ago and made a list of the top ten plants that cleans the indoor air better than others.

The students and teachers can learn a lot on how to live in a better environment from this study.

  9. I'm thinking paint...and after that make the kids walk by getting rid of the gas guzzling school buses then tear down the parking lot and plant trees!!! Put in more bike racks!! Make sure they are made out of recycleables!!! Then make every one only  get 1 hour of lights per class to save energy!!! Get rid of school lunches and make them bring their own! THat would save energy too. If you want to really be green switch to typewriters and recycled paper!!!

  10. One way our high school could become more green is to charge much higher parking permit fees and then take the money from the parking permit fees (which are about 40X lower than bus fees) and tear up some of the parking lot (which will be used less because of the higher parking fees). So they could use the money from the fees to plant trees, which will help offset the carbon produced.

  11. don't turn on the lights during class - open the blinds - don't leave lights on in bathrooms and unused classrooms

turn off any electronics that nobody's using - computers, computer monitors, etc. - the lights that show that they're on waste sooooo much energy.

    use more energy efficient lightbulbs

write on both sides of the paper

use air dryers in bathrooms instead of paper towels

reuse the other side of scan-trons

teachers can use smaller sheets of paper for handouts

    solar panels

recycle - save large sheets of paper and use the backs another time, save poster board, save old CD's so people don't use a new one all the time, use every space of a piece of paper you can

    put plants in every room

    plant trees

build a compost pile for food waste

use mass transit - aka, busses, carpool, w/e.

It's awesome that your school is doing this; for a while, my school didn't even recycle!!! Just keep in mind, yes, major changes are great, but if you do all the little things, they can save a lot of energy too. If everyone made just a couple of little changes in their homes, we would save so much energy. Good luck!

  12. Here are some ideas:

Make sure the school buses follow a "no idling" policy. It's law in some places but not in others. Sometimes buses idle for long periods of time waiting outside schools. Also, see if the buses could run on biodiesel.

    Use greener cleaning products.

Find out more about installing solar panels. The power generated by the panels actually causes the electric usage dial to go BACKWARDS to lower the school's electricity bills.

Greener lightbulbs is NOT a small change. Just think of the number of lightbulbs in the buildings. Also, the school could install more efficient parking lot lights if the current ones are getting old.

I know you said you're already recycling, but make sure the school and parents are recycling printer ink cartridges, paper and cardboard. Staples has a good program where schools collect ink cartridges from parents and local businesses and actually make money doing it. Also check into recycling phone books from the school and community every year. More recycling ideas: provide recycling containers at sporting events so all those cans, bottles and foam cups don't just get thrown away.

  13. Have you considered  roof-top gardening?  There are lots of possibilities.  By covering the roof with a garden, you could grow organic veggies for the lunch room, help to insulate the building with the garden, and use the rain water which normally would probably wash away into the sewer system. I assume you have already considered planting trees around the building.  You could collect the leaves from the trees and learn to make compost for the garden.  A roof-top garden could grow in many directions including fundraising and community involvement and awareness.

  14. organic food

  15. Paint the freakin school green.

  16. Paint probably a flat latex i would us John Deere Green myself

  17. lokesh

  18. carpool is a really good one, they should change the lightbulbs drastic or not. kids should take buses, teachers too. solar panels. conserve everything...
