What had brought about these problems, and how were the reforms accomplished? (AP EUROPEAN HISTORY)

  1. The church was very fragmented:

    - Roman-Catholic Church (Pope in Rome)

    - Eastern Orthodox Church (Patriarch in Constantinople)

    - Muslim / Islam Ottoman Empire (North Africa, Middle East, Turkey, Greece)

    It was also too old-fashioned for the evolving ideas of the time.

    Holy Roman Empire was weak, European kings were gaining power, the people started feeling a stronger allegiance to their kind than their church.

    The church was also very corrupt (sale of indulgences) and opressive (Inquisition), so many religious reformers saw it necessary to correct the problems at hand. The two biggest reformers were John Calvin and Martin Luther
