  2. Generally, the English colonies developed much faster economically, socially and politically than the Spanish and French colonies. The gross domestic product of the 40 largest economies in the world was 41.2 trillion dollars in 2005. Great Britain, together with just 4 of its ex colony countries, produced 16.7 trillion dollars, or 40% of this total. These four ex colonies are USA, Canada (although this was for a time a French colony), India and Israel (was 20th century British colony as Palestine).

All of Spain's ex-colonies, mainly in North, Central and South America (Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina etc) are still classed as third world countries with significant economic, social and political unrest.

The French ex-colonies in Africa suffer the same problems and are among the poorest nations on Earth, although other French ex-colonies in Asia such as Vietnam are now progressing well.

It is debatable why the English speaking colonies have been so successful in their advancements. It cannot be because of geography, as English ex-colonies are spread throughout the globe, from USA to Australia to Asia. I suspect that the reason may be cultural.

Whatever the reason, the facts point to much greater economic, social and political advancement in the ex-English colonies.
