it depends on the grade level.. relate the lessons and make a connection with the students

In stead of books and books all the time give them a break take them out of the classroom to the grounds play with them crack jokes etc make them feel lighter more relaxed. u cannot do this on regular basis as it would hamper their studies

By active I am assuming you mean up and moving around.  I would suggest small group work, using bean bags tossed around to answer a question, standing up when you are finished with an assignment, using individual dry erase boards to answer questions and showing the teacher when you have answered to check your work, chart paper and having each group or with a partner organizing or answering a prompt, using popsicle sticks with each childs name to call on them so that everyone is called on once and its random...there are so may ways.
