  1. Not sure what aspects of "family background" you're referring to.

If there's not enough to eat, that has a huge effect on children's ability to learn.

If the family don't value education, then they won't especially encourage it, which is a pretty big effect, too.

If a child comes from a home full of books, where reading is a normal thing, and the family talk about interesting things, about the whole world, then all of these things will be taken as things people automatically do: read and discuss, take an interest in the world.

Where these things aren't true, then there's less habit helping feed the intellect.

Then there's the whole expectation aspect. If the parents expect their kids to study and do well and complete their educations, that helps. If they don't, that impeeds, for most kids.

It's not true that uneducated parents always undervalue education. Many regret not being educated, and so really want it for their kids.

  2. Family background often has a bearing on education, but moreso with those who emigrated to the US from 1870 through 1920. Here are most immigrants who did not speak the language, came to this land to earn a living which was limited in the country they left. They worked for the educated , they saw the material and cultural benefits of education and were determined to provide the same incentive to their offspring. Education was always the key for upward movement as it is today They learned English, our official language, and never adulterated it as we have today by putting everything the government provides in Spanish. This leads to a more fragmented society.

  3. if education is important to the family elders, the standard will carry over to the next generation.

  4. For starters, if the parents are uneducated they will not value the education of their children and the cycle continues.

The higher the level of education that the parents complete, the higher the aspirations they will have for their offspring.

  5. Lower socioeconomic groups have higher risk factors in running into problems in the education system because of problems associated with higher risk to poor health, crime and deliquent behaviour, housing ect. These issue compound to put more stress on the family and take away many of the supports that a financially well off family may have. Additonally, way the parent models reading and things associated with education is also important because it sends messages to children this is a good thing to do. Also children from professional families have higher statistics in getting through the education system, my opinion but this is probably based on having more financial supports and as previously said less risk factorts but also excepting a higher goal because a higher goal is modelled to the child.
