I am no idea what the answer to that question is...

Neither to this: Why was there a term limit for dicators in Rome?

And What primary legal(in terms of law and breaking laws)principle did we adopt from Roman times? Why would one think so?

  1. Well there is quite a bit of history to be covered in that question.

It all starts in Greece actually. A man named Solon believed that government should be run by the "rule of law". He then published them onto stone tables for all to see. While Greece rejected them and kept their Democracy Rome adopted them and created the first Republic.

It was during this time that Rome became wealthy and the envy of the world. But eventually people became greedy and found that they could influence governance by enciting the masses. Soon the promises of taxation of the wealthy, subsidies for farmers, and welfare programs for the poor bore fruition and the Republic collapsed. Merchants fled Rome and the citzens roamed the streets demanding "bread and circuses" from the government.

It was in this time when the Republic collaped into a "mob rule" democracy and eventually anarchy that the Caesars eventually were able to usurp their once free society and turn it once again into a tyranny. Once a tyrant was in power only death relieved him of his rule.

Our founding fathers hesitantly adopted the wisdom of Solon as they understood that a society governed under the rule of law was the only truly free society. How ever they understood  that a Democracy was only a transitional state from freedom, to mob rule, to anarcy, then tyranny.

To prevent this they adopted several of the systems that the Roman Republic had, most notably the senate, however they sought to created a check and balance system that Rome failed to realize was needed. It was always thier concern that the fate of Rome would befall the new society they had created.
