  1. Their skulls are shaped differently from the past because their brains are bigger. CroMags skulls are like our skulls today, we came from them. We were smarter than the Neanderthals and wiped them out.

    Edit. CroMag had better tools.

  2. Both the Neanderthals and Early Modern humans ("Cro-Magnon" isn't used today) are descended from Homo eretus.

"Physically, Neanderthals are short, and very robust and heavily built, especially in the facial area.  They are clearly a hominid adapted to live in colder, harsher climates.  Scientific inquiry has led to the examination of Neanderthals in comparison to the standing of modern homo sapiens.  DNA evidence has place Homo neanderthalensis outside the reaches of variation of modern DNA."

"Homo erectus represents one the hominids closest, in eveolutionary terms, to Homo sapiens.  H. erectus has a large cranial capacity, yet differs from H. sapiens in the robusticity of its skeletal structure, name in the face.  A trademark of erectus appearence is a large supra orbital torus, post-orbital constriction, an occipital bun, a large jaw with a wide ramus, as well as having no chin."

Homo sapiens have a brain size of 1350cc and of lighter build then the Neanderthals. One reason for the extintion of the Neanderthals was that they were adapted to Ice Age Europe and lived in the forests.Homo sapiens were adapted to the steppes that came with the end of the Ice Age and out performed Neanderthals when it came to moving long distances. A good comparision would be between a  long distance runner and a football tackle.

Mentally, there appears to be a major difference between humans and Neanderthals. The latter used the same tool kit for most of their existence. Imagine 120,000 years of using the same tools. The only change to the toolkit appears at the end when some tools take on the appearance of those made, or were obtained from homo spaiens.
