  1. Ghusl (ceremonial bath) is of two kinds:

    1. Obligatory bath. 2. Desirable bath.

The actions requiring the Ghusl are six in numbers.

1- Discharge of al-Mani owing to stimulation and while enjoying sleep or awake. Feeling pleasure is not mandatory for this discharge in sleep, that is called wet

    dream.

2- Entering one's p***s in his wife's v****a, even if there was no ejaculation. The Prophet said: "When any one sits between the four parts of her body and exerts himself (has intercourse), bathing becomes obligatory (for both)' in some narrations "Even if there was no

    ejaculation".

    3- A non-Muslim when embracing Islam.

4- Menstruation: after the period stops, it is compulsory for correctness of Ghusl.

    5- Post-child birth bleeding.

6- Death. When a Muslim dies, it is obligatory to wash his or her body, except the martyr and the one who was killed unjustly. Both do not need to be washed.

The desirable baths are many; some are as below:

1- Before the Friday prayer. Some Scholars even believe that it is an obligatory bath. Anyway, it is better to keep performing it.

2- Making Ghusl before entering in the state of Ihram of Hajj or Umrah.

3- Performing Ghusl before 'Id prayers.

4- Making Ghusl after washing a dead Muslim.

Ghusl is as follows: First, the person washes his/her private parts, then makes the wudu (ablutions) as usually done before prayers, then pours water on his/her head three times till the water gets to the roots of the hair. After that, the person pours the water over his/her whole body and finally washes his/her feet. Rubbing the hair is not sufficient in both ways, indeed the water has to reach the skin of the head.

    Rest Allah knows the best~!

  2. The things that make ghusl a must are:

    1. The emission of s***n, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What requires water (ghusl) is if you see water (i.e., s***n) coming out of you." (Reported by Muslim)

    2. Contact between the genitals, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If one part enters the other part (in another report: if one part touches the other part), then ghusl becomes obligatory." (Reported by Ahmad and Muslim) This ghusl is obligatory whether or not fluid (s***n) is released. "Touching" here refers to the entry of the tip of the p***s into the v****a, not mere touching.

    3. Menstruation and nifas (post-natal bleeding), because Allah says what means: ". . . And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has ordained for you. . ." (Al-Baqarah: 222); and because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Fatimah bint Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her): "When your period starts, stop praying, and when your period ends, perform ghusl then start praying again." (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

    4. Death. The dead—except for a martyr slain in battle—must be washed (ghusl), because when his daughter Zaynab died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Wash her with water three or five times, or as many times as you see fit." (Reported by Al-Bukhari). And when a man who was in a state of ihram (consecration for Hajj or `Umrah) was killed by his riding-beast, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wash him with water and lotus leaves and wrap him in his two garments, but do not embalm him or cover his head, for he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection pronouncing the Talbiyah." (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

There are other types of ghusl about which the scholars differed as to whether they are obligatory, such as performing ghusl on Fridays, or whether a person who becomes Muslim needs to perform ghusl upon entering the faith.

  3. Ghusl is compulsory at times and recommended at times

    The compulsory Ghusl

    Sexual discharge

    Imaam ash-Shawkaanee said,

    يجب بخروج المنِيِّ بشهوةٍ ولو بتفكّر

"Ghusl becomes obligatory when s***n is emitted due to sexual excitement, even if it is a result of thought/desire"

1- Sexual intercourse (شهوةٍ): Ghusl must be performed even if no s***n is emitted

2- Thought/ desire (تفكّر): Ghusl must be performed if s***n is emitted

When one is in the state of Janaabah, he is not permitted to touch the Mushaf or pray

'Alee رضي الله عنه reported concerning the Maniyy (المنى) and the Madhiyy المذي. The Madhiyy necessitates wudhu and not ghusl whilst the Maniyy necessitates ghusl. As for the Madhiyy, then it is light in color and is usually emitted when thinking about sexual matters or fondling the spouse or after urination and this does not fall under ejaculation.

When the two private parts come together

    وبالتقاء الختانين

Even if there is no ejaculation or penetration, if the two private parts make contact then ghusl is required.

At the end of the Mensus and Postnatal Bleeding

    وبانقطاع الحيض والنفاس

    - الحيض Haydh is the blood that comes from the woman during her menstrual cycle

    - النفاس Postnatal bleeding produces a dark colored blood that appears after labor and miscarriage. The woman should not touch the mushaf in this state nor should she pray until the bleeding stops and she performs ghusl

    Allaah says,

"They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they are purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allâh has ordained for you (go in unto them in any manner as long as it is in their v****a). Truly, Allâh loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers)."

    (Surah al-Baqarah: 222)

So the ghusl is obligatory after the bleeding stops.

    Wet dreams

    وبالاحتلام مع وجود بلل

So if a person finds wetness in his underwear after waking up or some traces of s***n then the ghusl becomes obligatory upon him. If he wakes up and finds no wetness or traces of s***n, then ghusl is not obligatory upon him. And it was mentioned before that if the Maniyy comes out, then ghusl is required. This is also applied to women.

    Death

    وبالموت

It is a communal obligation to perform the Janaazah upon the dead. If a person dies then he must be washed and it is obligatory for the living to make ghusl upon the dead body as the dead person cannot do it for himself.

    Entering Islaam

    وبالإسلام

As for the kaafir who becomes a Muslim, then he must make ghusl since after become a Muslim it is incumbent upon him to make the Salaah even if he only knows سبحان الله or الحمد لله. Even if he takes a bath before taking the Shahaadah, he must make the ghusl. This is found in the Hadeeth of Thumaamah ibn Uthaal,

اذهبا إلى الحائط بني فلان فمروه أن يغتسل

"Take him to the garden of so-and-so and command him to make Ghusl"

And this is a part of the sharee'ah that a kaafir who becomes muslim, he must make ghusl.

  5. There are seven obligatory baths:

    Bath for Janabat

Bath for Hayz (for women only)

Bath for Nifas (for women only)

Bath for Istihaza (for women only)

Bath for touching a dead body

    Bath for a dead body

Bath which becomes obligatory on account of a vow or an oath to perform it.

    Rules Regarding Janabat

    351. * A person enters the state of Janabat in two ways:

    Sexual intercourse

Discharge of s***n, while sleeping or when awake, little or more, with lust or otherwise, voluntarily or involuntarily.

    352. When one cannot ascertain whether the fluid emitted from one's body is s***n, urine or something else, it will be treated as s***n if it is thrown out with lust and if the body is slackened. If all or some of these signs are not present the fluid will not be treated as s***n. In the case of illness, the fluid may not come out with sudden swiftness and the body may not slacken; but if the emission takes place with lust, it will be treated as s***n.

    353. If a fluid emitted by a healthy person possesses one of the aforesaid three signs and he does not know whether or not it also possessed other signs, and if before the emission he was with wudhu he will content himself with that wudhu. And if he was not with wudhu, it would be sufficient for him to perform wudhu only, and Ghusl would not be necessary.

    354. It is Mustahab that a person should urinate after the seminal discharge. If he did not urinate and an emission was seen after Ghusl, which could not been determined as s***n or something else, it would be treated as s***n.

    355. If a person has sexual intercourse with a woman and the male organ enters either of the private parts of the woman up to the point of circumcision or more, both of them enter Janabat, regardless of whether they are adults or minors and whether ejaculation takes place or not.

    356. If a person doubts whether or not his p***s penetrated up to the point of circumcision, Ghusl will not become obligatory on him.

    357. If (God forbid!) a person has sexual intercourse with an animal and ejaculates, Ghusl alone will be sufficient for him, and if he does not ejaculate and he was with wudhu at the time of committing the unnatural act even then Ghusl will be sufficient for him. However, if he was not with wudhu at that time, the obligatory precaution is that he should do Ghusl and also perform wudhu. And the same orders apply if one commits sodomy.

    358. If movement of seminal fluid is felt but not emitted, or if a person doubts whether or not s***n has been ejaculated, Ghusl will not be obligatory upon him.

    359. A person who is unable to do Ghusl, but can perform tayammum is allowed to have sexual intercourse with his wife even after the time for daily prayers has set in.

    360. If a person observes s***n on his dress and knows that it is his own, and he has not done Ghusl on that account, he should do Ghusl, and repeat as Qadha all those prayers about which he is certain that he offered them after the discharge of s***n. However, it is not necessary for him to repeat those prayers about which there is a probability that he might have offered them before the discharge of s***n.
