  1. The Scandinavians speak many languages well.  It's part of their culture.  They are the most widely educated, and fluent of English second language speakers in Europe.

Lots of fluent people, though, wherever you go, with a few exceptions...I don't know much about the Eastern countries, but in Italy, you might run into more places where it's difficult to find someone to help you out.  Parts of Spain, and much of Portugal, as well.  Dfficult to find many people who speak GOOD English in those countries.

Oh, and Scotland, too.  Really hard to find people there, that speak English (just kidding, of course, but the accent IS very difficult for us to understand sometimes!)

  2. i would say you would definitely have a hard time finding a lot of well spoken English speakers in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and other Eastern european countries.  If you're in tourist friendly area, im sure many will speak at least enough English for you to get by.

Belgium, Holland,  all the netherland countries (Denmark, Sweden and Norway), and Germany are all very English friendly and some even concider English to be one of their national languages.  Belgium for example has 3 national languages.  Dutch, English and French which means when travelling on say a train, announcements will be made in all 3 languages, and on signs, and packaging etc.  Germany is great too, a large percent of the local population is totally fluent, and almost all speak English to some extent.

Having said this though, its always polite to pick up at least your pleases and thank yous in the local language.  You'll probably get better service too if people know you're making an effort.

As for the aforementioned 'less fluent' countries, dont miss the opportunity to see them over a silly reason like a language barrier.  Definitely if you plan on hitting Europe, equip yourself with a bit of core French and Spanish before you go, it will make your travels easier and more enjoyable.  And for that matter, learn about all the places you plan on visiting!  This will allow you to get the best out of your dollar, and even if money isnt an issue, recommendations from those having already been to Europe are always helpful in making the best decisions for yourself and your travel companions whoever they may be.  You can find tons of information through Lonely Planet books, or free online through travel websites, Wikepedia etc.

Good luck if your planning a trip to Europe.  Hope i didnt over-do my answer.  Best wishes.

  3. Regardless of where you travel in Europe, the majority of Europeans speak the english lanuguage.  Most Europeans speak an average of 3 languages & english is always one of them.

  4. Scandinavia and the Netherlands.
