  1. I don't know in which countries students have the chance to choose Ancient Greek as an optional lesson but what I know is that If you don't know Ancient Greek you CAN get a job in Greece. However, modern Greek is totally related to Ancient Greek. It's actually the same language with some new vocabulary, including two kinds of words: loan-words from other languages and modern greek words derived from ancient greek etymological roots. If you want to understand modern greek  (the structure of the speech and the word forms), you should learn ancient greek. If you think that ancient greek is unrelated to modern greek, then you just don't know greek. Personally, I'm native greek speaker and I can totally understand greek texts written 2500 years ago.

  2. In Germany, Ancient Greek is an optional subject at quite a number of schools and even a required subject at long established schools with a high reputation.

The thing about having to know Ancient Greek to get a job in Greece is rubbish, though, I´m afraid. Ancient Greek has hardly anything (some dare say, nothing) to do with modern day Greek and therefore is NOT a necessary qualification to get a job - I know lots of Greeks who certainly never heard a word of Ancient Greek in their lives and do very well, working in Greece.

That would be a bit like claiming you need to know Latin in order to get a job in modern day Italy - you don´t. :)

  3. In Ireland ancident Greek is part of history lessons. Its included in world history

  4. i am from cyprus and ancient greek is not optional lesson and our languages is greek!
