Is it Japan as it's called "Land of the Rising Sun", or is it "Kiritimati, Christmas Islands, Kiribati" where time zones is ahead of all (GMT +14hrs) or it's some other country or island.

  1. Overall - Kiribati

Middle Summer (Northern Hemisphere) - Russia.

Middle Winter (Northern Hemisphere) - New Zealand Islands.

The closest country west of the international dateline may be the farthest ahead in time but not the first to experience sunlight. I would say Kiribati is the first to see the morning sun more than any other country

  2. I think that would really depend on the time of year as the sun is at different positions throughout the year thus changing the angle and speed at which sunlight would reach the earth. And depending on your geographic coordinates, that is a very relative question.

  3. No-where. There is no single place on the planet where the sun rises first. As i'm guessing you already know, the sun is always rising across the different time zones, so you can't really say that the sun rises first in one specific place, because the earth is constantly spinning.

  4. Neither.  It is actually Russia, the island of Big Diomede in the Bering Straight.

The date line passes equidistant between two Diomede Islands, Little Diomede Island (US) and Big Diomede Island (Russia), at a distance of 1.5km (1mi) from each island.
