In which direction will this rotor spin with this applied force? *picture*?

go to this on google sites and click the picture called "this one". the arrow is the applied force. in which direction will this spin?

note: this is very important. please do not answer if you are not sure. an explanation would be helpful, and most likely best answer.

the force is being applied on the side of the rotor that is lower in the image (below the axis of rotation), yet the line of action of the force passes the other side of the axle.

and also, I KEEP ASKING THIS because there are always different answers even from top contributers.

  1. I think Michael has the method to help you understand this, rotate the picture until the force line is horizontal.

    You have asked this 8 times now!

    .

  2. the rotor will will spin couterclockwise because the force acts perpendicular to the rotor 60 degrees from horizontal at a distance from the axis perendicular to the force at 30 degrees from horizontal.  whichever side the line of force acts perpendicular to the axis is the direction it will rotate.

  3. Anticlockwise - It's which side of the axle that the force acts which is important.

    If you are worried about the force being "below" the axis, just rotate the picture until it isn't.

  4. its anticlockwise. If you resolve the force in horizontal (x axis) and vertical (y axis) directions, then,

    Fx = Fcos(theeta)

    Fy = Fsin(theeta)

    Theeta is the angle the line of force F makes with the horizontal (x axis)

    there will be some value of Fx which will be less then the value of Fy, but Fy tries to move the rotor above, i.e, in the upward direction which is not possible as it is tied to the axle, therefore it will cancel out, now Fx tries to move it horizontally, (towards the left side), but again due axle, it will only move it in the anticlockwise direction, hope this is helpful.
