  1. decathlon

  2. He won 3 gold medals in the two-day event Decathlon. His golds were from the 1948 and 1952 summer Olympics

He was still in (or just out of) high school when his coach suggested that he try the decathlon whch he did. And to the  1948 US Olympic Trails..which won.

  3. Bob Mathias was a decathlete. He is one of those poor American athletics stars who was enshrined in fame for winning an event that is never actually shown live on American television. Except for the last event, the 1500, which occasionally is shown live, and sometimes the hurdles. Field events have always been ignored at the Olympics, nobody saw him in the shot put ring or the high jump.

Other Americans who won the "gold nobody watched" include Bruce Jenner, and that new guy who won this year, what was his name, aaargh... Bryan Clay. As usual, all nbc bothered to show Americans on television was a few highlights of some field events, and then a tape of the 1500 where Clay came in last. Not very respectful coverage.

  4. I believe it was the decathlon.  And to win 2 Golds in this event is truly a great accomplishment!
