Question:

In which states is it legal to purchase and own an ak-47 or other similar type rifles?

Assault ban was lifted a few years ago and it is unclear to me in which states that they are legal to purchase/own. Please advise....

  1. California has the most strict "Assault Rifle" laws. You can own them in any of the 48 lower states but each state has different rules you have to follow, like in California, you can't have more than 10 rounds in the magazine. Texas though, I think they lifted the ban completely, you can have telescoping butt-stock, removable magazine, over 10 rounds in it. But I think in all states, the barrel still has to be at least 16 inches long on rifles and shotguns.


  2. You can own them in all 50 states with certain caveats.

    If you are in a ban state like CT, NJ, Mass, HI, NY, CA you'll need to buy one that was in the state before the state AWB passed. That means "pre-ban" guns in ban states fetch a premium. They also have some that are in "post ban configuration" A post Ban AR in CA can have a detachable magazine but not a pistol grip, or a pistol grip without a detachable magazine.

    In free states like NH, Maine, VT, FLA etc. you may own a newly made weapon and it's not as expensive or hard to find them as it is in the ban states.
